Should I worry about cyber attacks?

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, you may have received some emails or notifications that cyber crime is on the rise. We’ve known for years that Russia is engaged in hacking, but what’s the point?

Cyber crime isn’t exclusive to any certain country — it’s just a part of warfare. Cyber crime can be used to paralyze a country’s infrastructure. This can precede an invasion — Ukraine saw a series of cyber attacks prior to being invaded, and it’s likely that they’re experiencing more cyber attacks now.

Although cyber crime is a form of warfare, anyone can be a target of cyber crime because most hackers are out to get personal or financial information. There are ways to mitigate cyber crime, and it’s important to stay on guard. Here are some ways to keep your information safe:

  • Change passwords regularly
  • Don’t click suspicious links
  • Watch out for email scams (tune in to this episode of One Quick Question for more information about how to spot fake emails)

Trust your gut instincts. If something seems suspicious, it’s best to avoid it altogether — only click links that you know are legitimate.

Our team also takes preventative measures to protect ourselves and our clients, such as staying on top of WordPress updates and using web application firewalls (WAFs) and hardware firewalls. Some of the steps we take are redundant, but it’s better to be safe than sorry — we’d rather take extra security precautions than not enough.

Web security is an ongoing battle, and it’s something that everyone needs to be aware of. That’s why it’s more important than ever to host your website with a secure hosting company (like Infomedia!) to stay on top of issues before they happen.
