Have Everything You Need to Start a Podcast?

Podcasts are more popular now than they’ve ever been. Have you ever thought about starting your own? You have a great idea, a name and a cohost on board, but if you’re not sure what to do next, we can help.

3Time to Organize

If you’ve already got the creative decisions behind you (idea, name, etc.), then it’s time to start thinking about logistics!

Style

You can pretty much do anything you want here. Yes, many podcasts are interviews (like our podcast One Quick Question), but that doesn’t mean you have to do interviews. You can do solo shows or mix it up and do both.

Length

Once you decide on a style, you can start thinking about how long you want your podcasts to be. Don’t listen to anyone who says they know the “perfect” length for podcasts. It doesn’t exist! Decide on a length that works for you, your topic and your audience.

Pro tip: While length doesn’t necessarily matter, try not to go off on long tangents that don’t relate to your topic. That’s when it can be “too long.”

Format

So this one may seem like it’s not a big deal, but if you put all of your “pieces” in the wrong order, it can have a huge impact on your overall episode. Placing your ads at the very beginning? Some people may just move on to a different podcast. Waiting to mention your call-to-action at the end? People may turn it off before then. Find what works best for you and roll with it!

Here’s an example of what your format could be, but really, make it your own!

  • Teaser
  • Intro music
  • Welcome
  • Call to action (subscribe, review us, visit our website, etc.)
  • Interview (or whatever your content is)
  • Ad spot
  • Outro music

Start Your Preparation

Many people would say that this is the most challenging part because you really have to nail down the specifics. Yes, podcasts are audio, but you still have to have some branding before you launch.

Cover Art

We’ve all heard the saying, “Never judge a book by its cover.” Yet we all know: That is exactly what everyone does. This also applies to your podcast’s cover art! First impressions are important, and you want the first thing your audience sees to represent your podcast in the best way. Luckily for you, we have some pretty great designers that can help you out with that.

Equipment

Getting the right equipment for your podcast can get very pricey, very quickly. We can’t stress enough how important it is to have high-quality equipment (like microphones and editing software) to make your podcast the best it can be.
