How Your Website & Social Media Work Together

Social media marketing is a great tool for your business, hands down. But many businesses treat it as an individual piece of their marketing, separate from other efforts. We’re here to help you understand how social media works with your website and SEO so that you can get the most out of your digital marketing.

Understanding the History

For the most part, Google holds the keys to SEO. Outside of their team, no one knows exactly how their search algorithms work. We do know that social media does not have a direct influence on your website’s rankings — but it does have an impact.

The link between social media and your website isn’t completely cut-and-dry. To start connecting the dots, we have to go back to 2010. Danny Sullivan, Google’s public Search Liason, announced that Google used “social signals” to rank organic results. A few years later, Matt Cutts, Google’s webspam team lead, added that Google uses social profiles as organic search results.

What does all this mean? Basically, websites that have a strong social presence will rank higher on SERPs (Search Engine Result Pages), but they don’t directly affect those rankings. The website must also perform well on its own.

How Social Media Works with Your Website

So, if social media doesn’t directly affect your SERPs, then how do they work together? Check out these tips to make sure you’re getting the most out of your social media and website efforts.

Make Your Content Go Further

Anyone in content marketing will tell you to make sure you get the most use out of your content. You put all that time and effort into it, so why would you waste it?

By sharing your website content on social media, you’re reaching a larger audience. The more people who engage with your content and visit your website, the more positive impact on your website.

Backlinks, Backlinks, Backlinks

Another benefit of getting your content in front of more people — backlinks. When other websites link to your website, it tells Google that your website has valuable content that more people would like to see. Social media is a great way to get your website content in front of the right people.

Build Trust

Let’s be honest – there are a ton of other businesses out there that do what you do. So what makes you stand out? Why should your potential customers choose you? Your social media profiles are a way for people to engage with your brand and begin to trust you.

Weak or nonexistent social media profiles are a huge red flag to potential customers trying to learn more about your brand.
